Strong Fences Start with Solid Posts

When it comes to building a fence that lasts, everything starts below ground level. You can choose the best panels and rails, but if your posts aren’t installed properly, the whole structure is at risk.

At Barker & Geary, we always say: a strong fence is only as good as its posts.

Fence posts provide the foundation for your entire fence line. They take the strain from wind, weight, and daily wear. Poorly installed posts can lead to:

Why Fence Posts Matter

  • Leaning fences
  • Loose panels
  • Premature rot or movement
  • Costly repairs down the line

Getting this step right from the start saves time, money, and hassle.

Our team can help you compare options and find the right solution for your site.

Setting Posts the Right Way

There are two main methods for securing fence posts: postfix (post mix) and traditional concrete. Both can provide a solid base when used correctly.

1. Using Postfix (Post Mix)

Postfix is a fast-setting concrete mix designed specifically for fence posts.

Benefits:

  • Quick and easy to use
  • Sets in minutes
  • Ideal for smaller jobs or quick installations
  • Concrete mixer not required

2. Using Traditional Concrete

For larger or more demanding installations, traditional concrete offers extra strength and durability.

Benefits:

  • Stronger, longer-lasting hold
  • Better for heavy-duty fencing or exposed areas

3.Correct Fence Post Installation

A well-installed fence post should be set firmly into the ground with suitable drainage beneath it. Adding a layer of coarse gravel or shingle at the base of the hole helps water drain away from the bottom of the post, reducing the risk of standing water and premature rot. Once the post is positioned, the concrete or post mix should surround and support the post securely. The top of the concrete should be shaped, or haunched, so it slopes away from the timber, helping water run off rather than collect around the post. This small detail makes a big difference to the long-term strength and lifespan of the fence.

Built to Last

Taking the time to install your posts properly ensures your fence stays strong, straight, and secure for years to come. Whether you’re working on a garden boundary or a larger agricultural project, solid foundations are key.

At Barker & Geary, we supply everything you need to get the job done right — from high-quality posts to post mix and tools.
